AJ Sorensen

How did you get into recording?

I’ll have to blame my friends for this — I found some basic recording software as a kid, and my friend and I figured out how to add voiceovers to animations in 5th grade. When it came time to record demos for my bands, I was always the one figuring it out.

My early recordings? Just like every beginner... they sucked. But I couldn’t accept that. I didn’t just want to just make demos — I wanted the sound of real records, the ones I grew up listening to. That’s where my obsession started and it's continued ever since!

Favorite Album?

There are too many to name, but one that really lit the fuse for me was Green Day’s Dookie. It wasn’t just the songs — it was the sound. The big, bold, punchy drums. Guitars that hit you in the chest. Melodies that stuck. It had this larger-than-life feel — like it wasn’t just a band in a room, it was a record. That production style, pioneered by mixers like Chris Lord-Alge, changed the way I listened. He’s mixed more hit songs than most people realize, and they all share that signature sound: clarity, punch, boldness. It’s not just mixing — it’s turning a song into something unforgettable. That’s the philosophy I bring to every session, whether it’s pop, rock, hip-hop, or folk.

What’s Your Favorite Genre?

I go through phases. Classical. Metal. Pop. Jazz. Rap. I’ve cycled through them all — loudly enough for my family to get sick of each one. Friends and artists have really expanded my tastes over the years.

I’ve recorded, mixed, and mastered every genre you can imagine — even songs in languages I don’t understand. But I always hear the potential in music, no matter the style, and I help artists shape that into something that connects with listeners.

From Performer to Producer

I started playing violin at the age of four and began performing not long after. My early training set the tone for a lifelong journey in music — one that still continues today as a member of the Fairfield County Symphony Society. I was the youngest member of the GBYSO Symphony Orchestra and studied violin under Claudia Tondi, a professional musician with the Greenwich Orchestra.

Over the years, I expanded into guitar, bass, drums, and vocals — eventually studying guitar under Al Ferrante, who also taught John Mayer. I’ve fronted bands, sung lead and backing vocals, taught music and voice, and performed all over the Northeast, sharing stages with national touring acts like Trophy Wives.

I’ve recorded and performed with artists including Samantha Preis (Love You Better), Matt Fitzgibbons, and Andy If. Whether I’m on stage or in the control room, I bring a musician’s sensitivity to everything I do — because I know what it takes to make something sound and feel right.
